"Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you peace as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:27 (NIV)
Did you ever wonder why Jesus left us with peace? As God's Son and part of the Trinity, Jesus had access to the whole universe. He could have left us with anything, he choose peace. This tells us the importance of peace.
The peace that Jesus gives us is far beyond any peace we can find in this world. The world's peace is temporary and superficial. It does not sink into our soul; it does not meet our deepest needs. Only our Creator, who knows us intimately can provide us with peace that is powerful enough to transcend any life situation. This peace calms our soul and removes distractions; it allows us to hear that quiet message from the Holy Spirit. It provides a respite from the stresses of life and helps us gain a more Godly perspective on this world and our life.
If Jesus left us with this gift, how do we access it? For most of us, God's ways don't come naturally. This is one of the reason's He sent his Son; to show us the ways of his Kingdom. These teachings are revealed to us in Scripture. He also left us with the Holy Spirit who can act as our translator, helping us understand God's message to us. By praying and reading Scripture, we get to better know the Trinity better. Since this peace is a gift, we need to claim it, then ask the Holy Spirit to help us use it in everday life. Like most other things, the more we learn to rely on this peace the more we learn to trust it.
